Sans conteste le plus célèbre et le meilleur ouvrage de l’historien, sur un sujet des plus recherchés ; ce travail a été rédigé à la demande de l’ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, désireux de valoriser ses annales chevaleresques.

L’abbé Vertot rencontra le succès dès son premier ouvrage, que Madame de Sévigné et Bouhours flattèrent pour son style, et ce succès rencontré partout ne se démentit jamais –

C’est ainsi que L’ordre de Jérusalem qui cherchait son historiographe fit appel à lui, dans sa vieillesse.
L’ouvrage vit le jour en 1726 alors que l’auteur était déjà malade et diminué. L’œuvre vaut par ses qualités imaginatives et stylistiques, tempérées par de plus profondes recherches que dans les précédentes œuvres de l’auteur. Le livre constitue en même temps une histoire des croisades –
