A magnificent panorama of nearly 360 degrees, taken from the Galata Tower at the turn of the twentieth-century. The photographer takes the viewer on a journey across Istanbul from the centre of Pera down to the Bosphorous as far as the Sea of Marmara, and then up the Golden Horn to the shipyards at Kasimpasa and Taskizak, and back to Pera. As one would expect from an image primarily produced for the wealthy tourist the majority of the city’s famous sites are visible: the Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Aquaduct of Valens, and both the Beyazit and Maiden’s Towers, with the fine Admiralty building by the dockyards. The Golden Horn provides a very evocative scene with a mix of steam ships, coastal sailing vessels and small boats all gathered together on the shores.

It is possible to date this panorama from a number of structures, including the Ottoman Bank which appears in the foreground of the panorama, and the Galata bridge connecting Eminönü and Galata, just to the left. The former, which still appears fresh and new in this panorama, was completed in 1892, whilst the latter was replaced by the fourth Galata bridge in 1912.

Sébah & Joaillier were one of the foremost photographic studios in Istanbul at the end of the nineteenth-century. Formed following the death of Pascal Sébah in 1886, the business was re-invigorated by the energy that Policarpe Joaillier brought to the business and he produced several panoramas such as the one described here in the following years. Although they failed in their efforts to become photographers to the Ottoman Court, they were recognised by the Sultan and awarded the Mecidi Order (3rd Class), and were appointed official photographers to Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1889 during his visit to Istanbul: “Photographes de la Court Royale de Prusse.”

Cornelis DE BRUYN

Antique print, titled: ‘Scutari – Serraglio di Constantinopoli’ – Very large view of Constantinople, Istanbul or Constantinopel, Turkey by Corneille le Brun. The print depicts a panoramic view of Istanbul / Constantinople and Scutari / Uskudar and is decorated with a variety of sailing ships.

This scarse plate originates from: ‘Voyage au Levant c’est a dire dans les principaux endroits de l’Asie Mineure dans les Isles de Chio, de Rhodes, de Chypre &c., de meme que dans les plus considerables villes d’Egypte, de Syrie, et de la Terre Sainte…’, by Corneille le Brun (Cornelis de Bruyn), published by Henri de Kroonevelt, Delft, 1700. First edition in French, first published in Dutch in1698 (‘Reizen…door de vermaardste Deelen van Klein Asia….’) In 1702 an English edition appeared as well.

Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Cornelis de Bruyn’ after an anonymous artist. Cornelis de Bruijn (also spelled Cornelius de Bruyn, pronounced (1652 – 1726/7) was a Dutch artist and traveler. He made two large tours and published illustrated books with his observations of people, buildings, plants and animals. Best known as a landscape artist, Le Bruyn travelled widely from a young age to Vienna, on to Rome then to Smyrna, Constantinople, Egypt, Jerusalem, Syria, Lebanon, and Turkey. Everywhere he went Le Bruyn depicted the scenes around him, he was especially interested in places of antiquity or historic interest, and his are the first images of the interior of a pyramid and Jerusalem to be widely available to Westerners. After an eight-year stay in Venice, Le Bruyn returned to The Hague in 1693 to publish this first book. From 1701 he started a second journey into Russia, Persia…

Jean Antoine GUER (1713-1771)

Jean Antoine Guer never travelled to the East himself. He composed his works by borrowing texts, information and occasionally illustrations from editions by P. Belon, J.J. Grelot, O.G. Busbecq, P. Ricaut, Maillet, J. Pitton de Tournefort, J. Tavernier, J. Thévenot and others. In the first part of his book of “Moeurs et Usagesdes Turcs, leur Religion, leur Gouvernement Civil, Militaire et Politique” he provides a concise history of the Turks and the Ottoman Sultans. The text continues with chapters on the administration and the institutions, the army, the palace, politics, religion and ceremonies, the national character, dress, dietary habits, houses, women, customs and traditions in the Ottoman Empire. Guer does not expand on matters concerning minorities, such as Christians or Arabs, and limits himself to the Ottomans. At the end of the first volume is a table of European sovereigns of the time.
