İSTANBUL PANORAMASI (4 PLANCHES)

VUE DE LAVILLE DE CONSTANTINOPLE

Capitale de L’Empire Ottoman

Baron de Philipp François Von GUDENUS (1710-1783)

Colored copper engraving, 412 x 59 cm

c. 1740

CONSTANTINOPOLTANAE URBIS EFFIGIES AD VIVUM EXPRESSA, QUAM TURCAE STAMPOLDAM VOCANT A° MDCXXXV.

MERIAN, Matthaus

1635, Frankfurt

22.8 x 69.5 cm.

Large, decorative view of the city of Constantinople, with legend across the bottom. It is beautifully engraved with quaint scenes of everyday life, including hunters with their dogs in the near foreground. Across the Golden Horn the various palaces, mosques and principal buildings.
Copper engraving, printed from 2 plates and originally mounted, by Matthäus Merian.

MERIAN, Matthaus (1593-1650), sometimes referred to as ‘the Elder’ to distinguish from his son, was an important Swiss engraver and cartographer active in the early mid 17th century. Merian was born in Basel and studied engraving in the centers of Zurich, Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris. Merian is best known for his finely engraved and highly detailed town plans and city views. Merian is considered one of the grand masters of the city view and a pioneer of the axonometric projection. Merian died in 1650 following several years of illness. He was succeeded in the publishing business by his two sons, Matthaus and Caspar, who published his great works, THE TOPOGRAPHIA and THEATRUM ERUOPEAUM…

Etching with engraving by le Rouge, Pillement, and Née after Melling, with later, professional hand-colouring. Proof before title. Very good condition…
68 x 106 cm., framed

Born in Lorraine in 1763, Antoine Ignace Melling, artist and voyager, was trained in architecture and painting. At the age of 19, he went to Constantinople as part of the Russian Ambassador’s retinue. After successfully completing several commissions for Hatice Sultan, the sister of Selim III, which included the renovation of her palace at Ortakoy, Melling was employed as the Sultan’s architect in 1795. His position as royal architect gave him a privileged opportunity to observe the Ottoman court, and during his eighteen years there, he made many detailed drawings of the sultan’s palaces, Ottoman society, and Constantinople and its environs.
Within a year of returning to Paris in 1803, Melling published a prospectus for the ‘Voyage pittoresque’, the first thirteen livraisons of which were published in 1809. He completed the engravings for this work in 1819.
