Large 17th century double copper engraving with two views. On top the castle of Yedikule, Istanbul: The Seven Towers (Turkish: Yedikule) is the name of a fortress in the city wall on the European side of Constantinople, where it ended at the Sea of Marmara; this fortress houses the famous Golden Gate.
Below the city of Gallipolis. This is the fortified city guarding the northern entrance of the Hellespont.
The engraving was made by C. de Bruyn for his book ´Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn door de vermaardste deelen van Klein Asia…´, 1698, Delft (Netherlands). In this book he describes in great detail a voyage of several years through the Ottoman Empire, mainly through modern day Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Israel and Lebanon.
