Cornelius DE BRUYN

1698

Image 27x36cm, sheet 33x39cm

Large 17th century copper engraving with three views of the Bosphorus, Turkey, near Istanbul (Constantinopel).

Each view shows part of the Bosphorus shore as seen from the water, with boats in the foreground. Shown are Doğancılar on the opposite side of the Bosphorus and Chalcedon, modern Kadıköy, ancient maritime town on the eastern shore of the Bosporus.

The engraving was made by C. de Bruyn for his book ´Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn door de vermaardste deelen van Klein Asia…´, 1698, Delft (Netherlands). In this book he describes in great detail a voyage of several years through the Ottoman Empire, mainly through modern day Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Israel and Lebanon.
