Cornelius DE BRUYN

1698

Image 27×36,5cm, sheet 31,5×38,5cm

Large, folio sized, 17th century copper engraving with three views of the area in and around modern dayIstanbul (Constantinopel).

In the top left a view of the Bosphorus at the entrance of the Black Sea. The other two images show the famous Aqueduct of Valens, the Roman aqueduct that supplied the city of Constantinople of water since the 4th century AD. Nowadays it lies well within the city limits of Istanbul, in the 17th century
(when the engravings were made) it was surrounded by nature.

The engraving was made by C. de Bruyn for his book ´Reizen van Cornelis de Bruyn door de vermaardste deelen van Klein Asia…´, 1698, Delft (Netherlands). In this book he describes in great detail a voyage of several years through the Ottoman Empire, mainly through modern day Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Israel and Lebanon.
