First edition of this 19th century travel account in the Middle East. Departure from Marseille on August 23, 1853, aboard the Mediterranean post liner “Alexandre”, bound for Egypt. Arrival in Malta, first port touched and visit to the city of Valletta, then it will be Alexandria, Jaffa, Jerusalem (seven important chapters), Bethlehem, the Dead Sea and the Jordan, Jaffa, Beirut, Rhodes, Constantinople (seven important chapters) . Return via the Cyclades, mainland Greece, Malta and Marseille.
Illustrated with woodcuts in text. Without the 8 lithographs out of text (including 5 in color).
Period half-sheepskin, smooth back decorated with gilded irons. – Rubbed caps, flats and edges (solid volume). Fresh interior, rare foxing.
