It is one of the most important travelogues written on Istanbul. Charles White (1793-1861), who came to Istanbul in 1841 and stayed for three years, conveys extremely valuable information about the capital of the empire in his book. From the variety of information in the book, we can see that White has observed in depth many different aspects of Istanbul life. By interviewing many prominent people from different segments of society, he personally found the places of the events he observed and included information whose accuracy was tested. The variety of topics covered in the book is astounding. This work, which examines everything that can be caught in the mind of a foreigner and arouse his curiosity, from subjects such as bedesten, bazaar-bazaar, coffee houses, water network, arches, libraries, sahhafs, slipper makers, socks makers, tobacconists, furriers, cheesecloth makers, halvaci and fesci tradesmen, from the wastewater system to consumed shellfish, from fish names and Istanbul flora to Turkish cuisine, is a complete folklore treasure in this respect. Charles White is a Turkish-friendly British officer who has written about 7 works and was the Istanbul correspondent of the Morning Chronicle newspaper during his stay in the country. During his stay in Istanbul, his rank was colonel. While writing his work, he received great help from Ahmed Vefik Efendi and reached information about the life of Turks and Muslims that a European could not reach. A German edition of the work, entitled Drei Jahre in Constantinopel, oder Sitten und Einrichtungen der Türken, was published in Stuttgart the following year, and a pirated edition with a different title History of the Capital of Asia and the Turks: together with an account of the domestic Manners of the Turks in Turkey was published in Boston in 1855.

İstanbul üzerine yazılmış en önemli seyahatnamelerden biridir. 1841 yılında İstanbul’a gelen ve üç yıl kalan Charles White (1793-1861) kitabında imparatorluğun başkentiyle ilgili son derece değerli bilgiler aktarmaktadır. Kitaptaki bilgilerin çeşitliliğinden, White’ın İstanbul hayatının çok farklı yönlerini derinlemesine gözlemlediğini görüyoruz. Toplumun değişik kesimlerinden birçok ileri gelen kişiyle görüşerek, gözlemlediği olayların mekanlarında bizzat bulunarak doğruluğu sınanmış bilgilere yer vermiştir. Kitapta ele alınan konuların çeşitliliği şaşırtıcı düzeydedir. Bedesten, çarşı-pazar, kahvehaneler, su şebekesi, kemerler, kütüphaneler, sahhaflar gibi konulardan tutun terlikçi, çorapçı, tütüncü, kürkçü, tülbentçi, helvacı fesçi esnafına, atık su sisteminden, tüketilen deniz kabuklularına, balık isimleri ve İstanbul florasından, Türk mutfağına kadar bir yabancının aklına takılabilecek, merakını uyandırabilecek her şeyi inceleyen bu eser bu bakımdan tam bir folklor hazinesidir. Charles White 7 kadar esere imzasını atmış, ülkede bulunduğu dönemde Morning Chronicle gazetesinin İstanbul muhabirliğini yapmış, Türk dostu bir İngiliz subayıdır. İstanbul’da bulunduğu sırada rütbesi albaydı. Eserini yazarken Ahmed Vefik Efendi’den büyük yardım görmüş, Türklerin ve Müslümanların hayatıyla ilgili bir Avrupalının ulaşamayacağı bilgilere ulaştı. Kısa bir süre içinde ikinci baskıyı yapacak kadar ilgi çeken eserin Drei Jahre in Constantinopel, oder Sitten und Einrichtungen der Türken başlıklı Almanca baskısı ertesi yıl Stuttgart’ta yapılmış, History of the Capital of Asia and the Turks: together with an account of the domestic Manners of the Turks in Turkey şeklinde farklı bir başlık verilerek yapılan korsan baskısı 1855’te Boston’da basılmıştır.
