The author, a Capuchin monk by the name of Justinien de Tours (he will have another pen name) lived for a long time in the Middle East and took many trips within the Turkish provinces. The work proposes to set the scene of the Turkish Empire’s decadence and of its unrest. If the first chapters deal with Mohammedan religion by discrediting it, the whole book addresses the subjects of the most varied traditions and customs.
