Very beautiful bound copy of this classic work by François Guizot, Minister of Education (public instruction) whose famous law on primary education established the foundations of the French school system.

Red half morocco with corners, ribbed back decorated with an elegant decoration with compartmentalized gilded irons. Double gilded fillet on the leather edge on the boards, gilded upper edge.

Complete in five volumes. The fifth volume was written by Madame de Witt, daughter of the author, according to the notes left by him.

The first printings of this text appeared from 1872 to 1876. Only the first volume is in the first edition (1872).

Beautiful copy, bindings of good general appearance, defects: damaged corners (pierced), three joints slightly cracked at the lower ends. (3 to 5 cm) for volumes 2, 3 and 4. Very fresh and clean interior, light foxing on the endpapers and rare leaves.

The illustration includes 75 inserts on wood for volume 1, 66 for volume 2, 74 for volume 3, 94 for volume 4, and 85 for volume 5, all drawn by Alphonse de Neuville, Philipoteaux. ..
