Pesth, 1818

This is the second of Hammer’s purely topographical works; it describes a journey made in 1804. Von Hammer was trained as an interpreter at the Oriental Academy in Vienna. He was send to the Austrian Embassy in Constantinople in 1799 and soon began to undertake various missions. In 1800 he visited the Austrian consulates in the Levant in order to prepare reports. In 1801 he accompanied the Anglo-Turkish expeditionary force to Egypt (Atabey p.291).
