Monumental work of synthesis, still fundamental. This work, published here for the first time in 1893, is the result of a collaboration between two of the greatest historians of their time. It takes place in a particular context, that of the Third Republic, where the teaching of history is considered an essential tool for forging national and republican identity. This period is marked by a strong positivist current, which advocates a scientific, objective and rational history. Lavisse and Rambaud, as leading figures of this school, thus undertook to retrace the history of France and the world, from the 4th century to their time, in an approach that was both rigorous and educational.
This work is divided as follows: The Origins (395-1095), Feudal Europe The Crusades (1095-1270), Formation of the Great States (1270-1492), Renaissance and Reform The New Worlds 1492-1559, Louis XIV 1643- 1715, The Wars of Religion 1559-1648, The 18th Century 1715-1788, The French Revolution 1789-1799, Napoleon 1800-1815, Constitutional monarchies 1815-1847, Revolutions and National Wars 1848-1870, and The Contemporary world 1870- 1900.
