Londra’da 1805 yılında gravür sanatçısı Frederick Christian Lewis’in oğlu
olarak dünyaya gelir John Frederick Lewis, ailesinden gelen sanat yönüyle
ressamlığa başlar ve kariyerinin ilk yıllarında zamanının büyük çoğunluğunu
hayvan resimleri ve illüstrasyonlar çizerek geçirir. 1829 yılında babasına eşlik
ettiği sanat gezisi yaşamında farklı başlangıçlara yol açar. Seyahat tutkusu onu
önce 1837 kışını geçireceği Paris’e, ardından da Floransa’ya, Napoli’ye ve iki
yıl kalacağı Roma”ya götürür (1833-1840). Güzergahında Arnavutluk,Korent
Körfezi Atina ve 1841 yilinda geleceği İstanbul’unda yer aldığı Levant gezisi,
yaşamının 10 yılını geçireceği Mısır’ın Kahire şehrinde sonlanır. Kahire’de
kaldığı zaman zarfında o kadar çok sayıda eskiz çizer ki, ülkesine döndükten
sonra Londra’nın dışındaki evinde 25 yıl boyunca bu eskizlerden yola çıkarak
resim yapmaya devam eder. Lewis’in eserleri aynı zamanda, sadece hayal
edilebilen Doğu’nun, yerini hayalden çıkıp gidilip görülen ve hatta yaşanabilen
gerçek bir coğrafyaya bıraktığını gösterir. Lewin’in İstanbul görüntülerinden
oluşan “Illustrations of Constantinople” albümünde yer alan sahnelerin 3’ü
Bursa,3’ü Orsova, diğerleri ise İstanbul konuludur. Resimlerde pitoresk
manzaralar ağırlıktadır. Sultan II. Mahmud dönemi (1808-1839) Istanbul’unu
temsil eden bu görsel şölen, Kral IV. William ile Kralice Adelaide’e ithaf
edilmistir.

Born in London in 1805 as the son of engraver Frederick Christian Lewis,John
Frederick Lewis began his career as an artist like his family and spent most of
his time drawing animal paintings and illustrations during the early years of his
career. The trip he took with his father focusing on art in 1829 ended up leading
him to different paths in his life. His passion for travel first took him to Paris to
spend the winter of 1827, then to Florence,Naples and finally to Rome where he
stayed for two years (1833-1840). The Levant trip which included places like
Albania,Gulf of Corinth,Athens and even Istanbul in 1841, ended in Cairo,
Egypt where he spent 10 years of his life.During his stay in Cairo, he drew so
many sketches that after returning to his country, he continued to paint based on
those sketches for the next 25 at his home on the outskirts of London. Lewis’s
works also show that the East,which could only be imagined, had been
replaced by a real geography that can be seen and experienced.In Lewis’s
album of scenes from Istanbul named “Illustrations of Constantinople”,there are
3 images of Bursa, 3 of Orsova,and the rest are of Istanbul. Picturesque
landscapes are at the forefront of these pictures. This visual feast representing
the Istanbul of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839) was dedicated to King William
IV and Queen Adelaide.
