2 volumes, octavo (175 x 105 mm). Bound without the wrappers in contemporary brown quarter morocco, marbled boards, titles to spines gilt, raised bands with ruling in blind, speckled edges. In a marbled paper, leather entry slipcase. Bindings a little rubbed at extremities, some spotting to little pages and early leaves of volume I, but overall a clean and fresh set in excellent condition.

First edition, trade issue. With the dedicatee’s name misspelt (Senart for Senard) as called for. A pretty copy of one of the greatest novels of its epoch and Flaubert’s masterpiece.
