For similar sets of images, see Bibliotheque National de France, Département Estampes et Photographie, 4-OD-23 and British Museum 1974,0617,0.12. The British Museum set is particularly interesting for the similar wash borders and manuscript captions. That set was accomplished in 1790 for the Prussian Ambassador to Constantinople Heinrich Friedrich von Diez. The French captions on the present set, with similar borders, suggests these fine watercolours to have been accomplished for a French diplomat or traveller of note.
