Le baron de Tott, d’origine hongroise, né en 1733, fut successivement secrétaire d’ambassade de France à Constantinople et chargé de missions dans la petite Tartarie et Crimée et inspecteur général des consulats sur les côtes méridionales de la Méditerranée en 1776. Devenu maréchal de camp en 1781, Tott commanda la ville de Douai avant la Révolution puis en 1790, la garnison ayant formé un projet qu’il voulut déjouer, s’insurgea et menaça de le pendre. Il échappa à ce péril vint à patis puis en Suisse et enfin se retira en Hongrie où il mourut.

Abbé Barthélemy adıyla da tanınan Fransız aydın, nümizmatik uzmanı ve yazar Jean Jacques Barthélemy (1716-1795) güney Fransa’da varlıklı bir ailede doğar, felsefe, din bilim, klâsik arkeoloji öğrenimi görür. İtalya’ya yaptığı seyahatten esinlenerek İ.Ö. 4. yüzyılda antik yunan dünyasında gezinen Skithis adında bir gencin yaşantılarını anlatan ve aynı zamanda arkaik ve klâsik devirlere de göndermeler yapan bir roman yazar.

Barthélemy 1757’den beri Antik Yunan Çağını incelemeye ve hakkında yazmaya koyulur. İlk yapıtını 1788’de yayımlar, bu ünlü edebî eserin dördüncü basımını hazırlamaktayken 80 yaşında vefat eder.

Abbé Barthelemy eski yunan ve lâtince eserler üzerine çalışıp edindiği bilgileri, J. Foucherot ve M.G.F.A. Choiseul-Gouffier gibi araştırmacıların keşif çalışmalarına dayanan doğrulamalarla, haritalar üzerinde kaydetmek usulüyle metnini güvenilir ve temsili canlandırımlarla tamamladı.

Roman türü bir anlatış ve bir yolculuk anlatısı bileşimi olan ve bir çok ciltten oluşan bu eser bir yandan antik yunan dünyasının panoramasını romantik bir biçimde sergilerken öte yandan Barbié de Bocage’ın harita ve eskizleri ile zenginleşmiş haliyle devrin okur kitlesinin antik çağa karşı ilgisini körükleyip zamanın en çok satan kitaplarından biri oldu ve 19. yüzyıla değin üstüste yeniden birçok kez basılma şansına nail oldu.
